OPS GIRLS MAKE HISTORY WITH FIRST CRICKET MATCHES

Posted: 7th May 2019

Last Monday, our girls played their first Cricket matches in their first ever Cricket season at the school. This comes as we have removed Rounders from the curriculum in favour of Cricket, allowing the girls to play the sport for the first time.

The first matches were played against Holme Grange School in Wokingham. All seven of our girls’ teams won, and every girl in Year 5 through to Year 8 had the opportunity to bat, bowl and field.

The change in curriculum comes as women’s Cricket is fast growing in popularity, since the prosperity of the women’s national team. Many other prep schools have also now decided to take up Cricket and play fixtures against each other, which allows the girls’ skills and sportsmanship to blossom.

Speaking about this historic moment, Sophi Butler, Head of Girls Games, said ‘Our girls have taken to it with an open mind and absolutely love this new sport. They are already showing great progress with their techniques for both bowling and batting, and they are also enjoying learning the tactics of this new sport.’

With such an excellent start to the season, we anticipate great things from the girls over the coming weeks, and we are excited to see their skills develop.
