Year 4’s Exciting Exploration at the Earth Trust!
What a day our Year 4 students had on Thursday 3rd October, during their trip to the Earth Trust in Little Wittenham! As part of their half-term theme, Power and Principles, they dove deep into a fascinating study of Rivers and the Romans.
Their adventure began by exploring the River Thames, where they observed flood management systems in action, including the impressive weir at Day’s Lock. This hands-on experience provided them with an understanding of how the river’s flow is managed, an essential element in controlling floods.
Next, the pupils turned their attention to history as they analysed Roman artefacts, including fragments of pottery uncovered during archaeological digs at the Earth Trust. This provided a unique glimpse into the everyday life of the Romans in the area.
The adventure continued as they climbed the Wittenham Clumps, gaining a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Here, discussions focused on life before the Romans arrived, as well as the lasting impact of Roman occupation on the region. Their excitement grew as they ‘invaded’ Castle Hill, recreating what the Roman Army might have experienced when they first arrived at this hillfort!
To cap off their day, the students visited a current archaeological dig site, where they learned about a recent Roman villa excavation and reflected on the enduring legacy of Roman civilization in Britain.
This immersive, educational day left Year 4 with a deeper understanding of both history and geography, connecting their classroom learning to the world around them.
Well done, Year 4! We can’t wait to hear all about your next adventure.
