This morning we held our Founder’s Day Mass. St John Henry Newman founded our school and every year on 9th October we celebrate the date that marks his conversion to Catholicism in 1845.
Five years ago he was canonised as a saint by Pope Francis. Today Fr Macnab told our pupils about the difference of opinion between the Birmingham Oratory and the Vatican over the attire in the image used for the canonisation. The Vatican preferred a more formal image of Newman in his cardinal’s attire, but Fr Ignatius and his team preferred a more authentic image of Newman in his everyday attire – as you can see in this photo.
Newman’s motto “Heart speaks to heart” continues to inspire our OPS community, reminding us to approach life with compassion, integrity and open dialogue. His commitment to education is deeply woven into our school virtues: Curiosity, Kindness and Wisdom.
